Thank you for your replies and advice, I will definitely look at the DLA Resources Catherine. In reply to Gary and Sarah, yes, we are paying the Residential Care fees as mum is over the threshold and does own her own property, The only way the property will ever be safe is if mum has 24/7 care in her own home. We are working out a plan B just in case she demands to come home. We do have Lasting Power of Attorney but if mum wants to go back to her own home, I don't think we can reasonably refuse if we can get her a full time live in carer. Problem is, finding one, and a good one at that. The cost of mums residential care is over £5k a month, maybe with social services support package payment and a top up form us, this could work out cheaper but we want the best care possible as mums condition seems to be deteriorating at an alarming rate.

Hello Brassed Off,

Questions beyond those you asked about AA are really beyond the scope of this site, but I do have a little personal experience with what you are going through which I am happy to share.

I have a friend whose mother has full-time live-in care. She uses an agency to provide this, which means that they provide cover for when the main carer has annual leave and time off each week. It also means that should the main carer fall ill or wish to leave the job they are suddenly left alone with a problem. This is not something I have explored, but my friend thinks the service the agency offers is worth every penny. The main carer has a couple of hours off every day, when she can leave the house if she so wishes.

My mother initially moved into a care home, which was funded by her private pension, state pension, AA and taking money from her savings. When her condition deteriorated to the point that the care home were no longer able to look after her we moved her into a nursing home. We were able to get her a package known as NHS continuing care, which covered the nursing component of the fees, and this was not means tested. The managers of both the homes were helpful in discussing the financial options, and had lots of experience.

I really don’t envy you going through the whole process – lovingly managing your mother’s needs whilst also taking responsibility for the business side of matters. I was given some very wise advice whilst we were going through it – whilst you clearly care for your mum, remember to decide what you are willing to do in terms of time, effort, travelling etc etc, and set yourself firm boundaries. It is also important to protect your own health and your family relationships.

Wishing you and everyone involved with your mother’s care all the best,
Catherine

Thanks for your reply.
Is there anywhere on Benefits and Work that advises on the NHS continuing care?

Hi Brassed Off

Unfortunately not, this is outside the remit of the forum. There is some information on MAS web site www.moneyadviceservice.org.uk/en/categories/paying-for-care also check the drop down box Family and Care on the link.

Just wanted to say that reading these posts am touched by the effort you are both going to provide first rate care for your mothers. I am 73 approaching 74. I cannot envisage such care being provided for me when I am completely incapacitated.
I live alone and would be lost without the extras that D.L.A helps me with.
Such as taxis to hospital appointments and online supermarket shopping. (Broadband) paying for deliveries etc. Cannot carry shopping up the stairs any more. Toenail cutting service. Podiatrist etc.etc.
So don’t even want to think about what will happen to me when I get too old.
So good to read of your care and love for elderly mothers.
