Cancelling Benefits was created by Nigel2671
Hi - I am 60yrs old and have been living with liver Cirrhosis for 10yrs and recently found out after a discusssion with my specialist that realistically i only have maybe 10yrs of life expectancy (maybe shorter if any complications arise). With this information i have decided to cancel my ESA (and Housing Benefit) and take my pension as a lump sum. My question is....what is the best way to do this as ive heard stories of it not being as easy as just phoning them up and cancelling them. Should i wait until my pension money arrives and then cancel or cancel beforehand giving them a date i want it to stop? Has anyone else gone through this process?, i would love to hear how you went about it. Many thanks in advance

Hi Nigel2671

Your question is outside the remit of the forum.

Before you make any rash decision I would advise you to seek help from your local Welfare Rights Organisation who will be able to advise you.

You can find your local Welfare Rights Organisation to help you with advice by clicking on the link below and putting in your post code, it will then come up with a MAP with a list of agencies.

Morning Nigel. Do not cancel anything until you start getting your pension. The amount you receive will affect whether or not you can still receive any benefits. Also if you are getting Housing Benefit at the moment, you may be entitled to some ‘Disability’ help even if you get a pension.
I would get an appointment at your CAB with an expert on Benefits.

Also Nigel, have you informed your pension provider of your specialist's prognosis? This should mean you get an 'impaired life' higher amount I believe. I hope so anyway.
best , Denby
