Can you get points when refusing meds? was created by Chlorinated
Hi

Regarding managing treatments and taking medication.

Suppose you have some treatment eg ointments for a mild case of eczema but you fail to apply it does this because of a other more major condition, does that mean you can get points for not doing the eczema treatment?

Also if you have a psychiatric condition and refuse to take medication because you lack insight about your condition/do not think you have a mental health condition can you still get points or is it not applicable as you are not practically attempting to take the medication?

Thanks

Hello Chlorinated,

In my opinion if you choose not to take some medication because of a sound reason, as per your example of eczema cream I would not expect you to get points.

However, if you have a mental health condition which means you are not taking your medication for any other reason I would argue that you need encouragement to do so, so should get points.

I hope this helps

Sorry Catherine can you clarify your answer I did not understand it.

First I wasnt saying you don’t apply the cream because it’s mild. I was saying imagine you are overwhelmed by your many illnesses and so do not apply your eczema cream out of neglect, surely this means you need encouragement to apply it? Or you saying you wouldn’t get points?

Similarly if you don’t take psychotropic medication because you are overwhelmed, depressed etc wouldn’t that mean you need encouragement, or are you saying like the eczema case you wouldn’t get points?

And if you refuse medication because you lack insight/don’t accept you have a mental health condition are you saying you should be encouraged and get points?

Thanks

Oh dear, I really did not explain myself well, did I. Sorry about that.

If you don't take medication for any reason, other than you have actively chosen not to take it, then you should get points for needing to be encouraged to take it.

Hope that makes it clearer!

Be aware that you can only score one point for issues related to medication.

Unless you also hope to score for

4e. Needs assistance to be able to get in or out of a bath or shower. 3 points.

then scoring for medication cannot help you to an award as it will leave you with only seven or eleven points.
