Hello,

I am currently on CB ESA approved for another 2 years. I claim housing benefit with it. I made a claim for ESA and housing benefit a few years ago when UC wasn't rolled out in this area so it stayed like this. Unfortunatelly due to my terrible living conditions I have to move, I have found a place in a different london bourough but it is a Universal Credit area. My questions are; will I loose contribution based esa support group approved for another two years if I move and will be claiming housing costs? Will I have to switch comletly to Universal Credit? If so would Universal credit put me in a 'support groupt'? How to go about it. I know from what I have read that moving somewhere and not claiming housing costs would not attect ESA CB but I need to claim housing costs too. Thank you!

Hi Agis

Your post is a bit confusing, you inform us that you are in receipt of CB ESA and claim HB. As HB is a means tested benefit, the first question I would ask is do you receive a top up of IR ESA?

You are correct in saying that as you will be moving to a different local authority you will have to apply for the housing element of UC, as ESA is a taxable income, what you receive in one hand is taken away from the other.

I would advise you to seek help from a Welfare Rights Organisation who can take all your circumstances into consideration. You can find your local Welfare Rights Organisation to help you with advice by clicking on the link below and putting in your post code, it will then come up with a MAP with a list of agencies. advicelocal.uk

Dear Gary, I receive CB based ESA, housing benefit and lowest rate of PIP.

I have never applied for IR Esa as a top up because I didn't know how.

My question is how would I have to go about moving to Universal Credit area and wanting to claim housing element of UC while remaining on CB ESA Support Group. I have support group till August 2023.
They have informed me of it on the phone. No letter.

I don't know how to go about it. When should I inform them I am in Support Group for another two years? When I fill in the UC apllication it only asks about fit notes. I put that my fit note is till 2023. Is this how you suppose to do it?

Is this true that I would still have to see a work coach?

I don't want to loose CB ESA Support Group just because I am moving the area.

How should I preoceed when applying for UC housing element?

Hi Agis

I cannot give you an answer as I do not know all the facts of your circumstances, you do need to see a Welfare Rights Organisation as per my earlier post.

When you apply for UC it does ask you what benefits are you in receipt of.

When you apply for UC you do have to see a work coach.
