You may possibly think this is a silly query but, as I will be filling out my wife's PIP claim on her behalf her as her grip is too poor to write for a long time without cramping and pain. My question is should I be answering in the first or third person?.

It isn't a stupid question at all and a lot of people ask about it. My view is that it is generally better to speak in the third person when filling out a form for a claimant because it makes it clear that the person did not do it for themselves.
If you write for a claimant in the first person there is a danger of making them appear more capable than they are. So even if the form says that a claimant has difficulties due to arthritis - assessors are all too quick to think the person has just filled out the form and attached 10 pages of evidence - so if they can do that what else can they do?
However, I should say that there are no hard and fast rules - other than you should put at the end of the form if someone else filled it in.

Hi George,
I have had forms filled out at the CAB in the past and they have always been written in the 1st person.
As long as the claimant signs it there shouldn't be a problem
