ESA to UC was created by gaz111
Hello,

I was wondering, when I get transferred from
ESA to UC will there be a period of time where I am left without money? Like a few weeks wait? I’ve heard about that 5 week wait and people having to take out an advance but not sure if this is the case when you are moved from ESA to UC? Or will the UC start as the ESA stops leaving no payment gaps?

Thank you

Hi gaz111

When you apply for UC your ESA claim will stop, if you are in receipt of HB then there is a run-on.

You are correct in saying that it takes 5 weeks for UC to start payment providing everything goes smoothly. www.gov.uk/universal-credit

If you need money to live on then you have to ask your workcoach for an advanced payment, this is recovered once UC payments start and can be spread over 24 months. www.gov.uk/guidance/universal-credit-advances

Hi Gary,

Thank you for your answer.

That is out of order by the DWP to stop ESA as soon as you have to make a claim for UC as it’s leaving people with no money, well, as you said you can apply for an advance which you have to pay back. This saves the DWP money with that gap.

Sorry, did you mean HB will continue or will that stop too in this transition period meaning we will have to find the rent ourselves until the UC money comes through?

Many thanks

Hi gaz111

HB has a run on, i.e will continue for two weeks: www.gov.uk/guidance/moving-from-housing-...-to-universal-credit.
