I always use a sound recorder program on my laptop to audio record record my phone calls (which I put on loudspeaker so they can be recorded) for important calls that are to government departments, as well as doctor phone appointments (I record all face to face appointments also using an audio recorder app on my phone).

I do this to make sure I have a record of it in the event that the DWP or local council or whoever it is and I have an issue that needs clearing up or proof.

In the UK from what I have read, it only requires one of the parties to a phone call to consent to the recording (so you do not need to inform or ask the other party to the phone call), and in person appointment recording is not even something that would be covered under any wiretapping regulations/legislation and of course can e done covertly (without consent or informing anyone).

I record doctor appointments if I forgot what was said specifically and need to refer to it for my own records only.

Note that you can audio record disciplinary meetings at work regardless of what the company policy says, since I did this back when I was working and had to go to Employment Tribunal and I did the diciplinary meeting without anyone with me to take notes (the company saw this as an opportunity to lie when taking their notes which my recording of the meeting proved the had falsified the notes), and as my recording was allowed as evidence at court by the judge, it was this proving that they lied that helped me win my case.
The company was furious of course but that is legal to record.

Note that you can never record a court hearing, and the judge who allowed my recording from the work disciplinary meeting did ask me if I was recording the court hearing (I was not as I knew it was not legal to do), and so she made it clear that would be contempt of court if one does record a court hearing.

You basically have nothing to lose and everything to gain by recording calls such as this. If you don't ever need to listen to the call then it's not like it takes much effort to record and store the calls. It's a free insurance policy of sorts to make sure you have evidence of what was said.
