PIP Form extention was created by Kieran
Hello,
I have to ask for an extension on handing in my PIP form, to do this it says I should call the number and a case worker will decide if I have a good enough reason.

The thing is they already sent an automatic extension of 14 days (I didn't ask for)
I should have completed the form by now but suffer with depression and anxiety and because of these, I haven't been able to face doing it, the fact that it's 50 pages long is intimidating enough but the dense nature of the wording and the stress of getting it wrong is paralysing.

I'm doing my best to fill it out and am using the guide from here but it feels impossible, my mental health varies and by its very nature isn't easy to explain or talk about.

My question is what do I say to the case manager on the phone, and if they say no then what can I do?

Many thanks,
Kieran

Hello Kieran,
.
What you tell them on the phone is exactly what you have told us! When you speak to them have an idea of how much extra time you think you will need and ask for that (plus maybe a little bit more just in case). They can only say no, but generally they say yes.

If they do say no, then I would recommend that you complete the form on a very basic level, and then send in more information as soon as you can. So for example, fill in the easier bit at the start where is is all factual, and when it comes to the activities tick the right boxes and where there is the big empty box for you to just write in put something like 'I have difficulties with this activity, but due to the nature of my condition I am not able to complete this box and return the form in time. I will submit additional information within a month.'

I hope that helps, and please do come back to us if you need to. You should not feel alone in fighting the form!

Catherine

Hi Catherine,
Thankyou for your help, it was really good to read it before I called today.
For anyone wondering, I called and the person I spoke to couldn't have been more helpful, he spent 20/30 mins explaining what to do and gave me lots of advice, a lot of which echo's what is on this website.

He ended up giving me a 30 day extension and advised me that they have been having issues with their postal service, he said if you send the form in tracked/signed for then it gets sent through as 'valuable' so is tracked through their internal system and he'd be able to track it if there were any issues.

Thanks again,
Kieran

Hi

based on Kierans positive outcome, I rang for an extension. It took about 30min to get through and I talked to a very nice man who was a bit fluffy on how long I could have, but said if I needed more time to just call them. Do they send anything to say you have the extension.

As mentioned, he said they were having problems with post and to ring to check it's in the system. So best to send it a few days before the expiry of the deadline, then call to check it's all OK. 8 weeks to result currently for a review.

HI The Hud,

Unfortunately they don't send you anything to say that you have been given an extension. When I make such calls I always intend to record the call, just in case, although have to admit that I don't always remember. Having said that I have never had a problem with them denying that an extension has been given.
