Hi all I am on contribution ESA and have just inherited money after losing my mum.im not sure what the procedure is regarding telling dwp I have looked online and it is saying I don't have to tell them being as it is contribution based I'm a bit worried that I'm not doing the right and don't want to end up in trouble any help would be much appreciated

Hi Chrissie,
I'm sorry to hear that you mother has passed away.
You are right, Contribution based ESA is initially paid because you have made sufficient NI Contributions in the relevant preceding years. As long as you are too unwell to work you can continue to receive this irrespective of whatever money you have in the bank. Nor is it affected by a partner's income or savings.
(This is completely the opposite if you were on means tested benefits.)
So, there is no need to contact DWP. However if you get Housing Benefit or Council Tax Reduction then you must notify your Council as these ARE means tested.

however if you get council tax reduction for using a room for storing disability items that too is not means tested
