Requesting a paper-based assessment

Requesting a paper-based assessment was created by Jasmin
Hi,

I've been given a date for a PIP telephone assessment.

My PIP review form specifically states that I struggle on the phone due to severe anxiety, especially for prolonged periods of time. I freeze, go mute and can't communicate. My carer usually takes and makes calls for me.

This phone call would be impossible for me to manage and would cause extreme distress. Just the thought of it is enough to make me feel very distressed, panicked and trapped.

My carer is going to call them tomorrow. Can we specifically request a paper-based assessment? If they refuse, can their decision be challenged?

Thank you.

You can request a paper assessment but you cannot require it, your best way to avoid the call is to have your GP, assuming they are willing, write to the Assessment Provider telling them that such an interactive assessment would be detrimental to your health and would cause you "overwhelming psychological distress".

Thank you, Gordon. I took your advice and got a supporting letter which made it very clear that I wouldn't be able to cope with a telephone assessment and that it would cause "overwhelming psychological distress."

Initially IAS refused to change to a paper-based assessment despite this evidence, but I'm very lucky to have an assertive and persistent carer who refused to accept that. Today, they finally agreed and have put in a request for a paper-based assessment. Fingers crossed that's the end of it, for now.

Thank you for your advice and guidance, it's much appreciated!

Hi J

Good on your carer for pushing for the change. Well done to both of you.
