Planning and following journeys (Familar and unfamilar journeys)

I am getting confused between familiar and unfamiliar journeys! I have short term memory problems and every quarter of a year I travel to my parents which involves using a train which I have done for the last 35 plus years which probably makes it a familiar journey! However, approximately six years ago I developed a pain condition called CRPS and a memory problem called functional cognitive disorder. Before I had these problems I still had to plan my journey by looking at the website for the timings. Since having these problems I have found myself struggling to use the website and sometimes forget the other couple of route options I have. I have tried phoning National Rail to get help but I still wasn't able to process the information so now I go down to the train station a couple of days before travelling and get the guard to plan and print out my route. In your opinion is this a familiar or unfamiliar route?

Based on what you have said in your post, the journey to the train station would be a "familiar" one, you don't seem to have any problems doing this. Any trip from the train station to another destination would be an "unfamiliar" journey, you seem to have problems completing this.

Hi Gordon,

I do actually have problems reaching the train station or other short journeys that are similar. I use my car but often forget where I am going or how to get there. About 50% of the time I take several wrong turnings which normally end up at least doubling my journey time. So if I understand you correctly any journey by train is an unfamiliar journey even if I have done it for 35 years?

Hi Anne

No that was not what Gordon was saying. If you travel by train to the same destination for 35 years then that would be a familiar journey.

If you went by train to a different destination you had not been before then that would be an unfamiliar journey.

If you travel to your doctors regularly that would be a familiar journey but if you get an appointment to see a specialist at a hospital, that would be an unfamiliar journey.
