Informing DWP about inheritance in order to stop ESA

Someone on ESA expects to inherit a lot of money and this will disqualify them from recieving further ESA payments.

They will advise the DWP to stop payments and do so at the correct time. There is no wish whatsoever to receive more payments than entitled.

However is it better NOT to mention the reason (the inheritance) or its amount (several hundred thousand pounds) in case this makes the DWP start a slow and protracted correspondence for all sorts of further details and documentary proof?

The person has a truly disabling phobia about handling paperwork; even a modest amount of unnecessary correspondence would utterly overwhelm their waking moments for weeks or months.

Hi Finni,

Sounds to me from what you've said that it may be better for them to just close their claim (due to the amount of the inheritance). If there's no claim in progress, then they shouldn't be able to snoop on the persons bank account.

Not sure if any other claimants have experienced anything similar, and have any further or different thoughts on this ?

Chris.
