I'm not bothered personally about the DWP checking my building society account, never had a penny given to me that I haven't earnt up until becoming unwell and asking for PIP in my late 50s. But still I see this as a gross invasion of privacy, the DWP already has it's fraud investigation teams so this is more media manipulation, worrying folks who are more often than not genuinely in need.

As far as I know, not Gunther. The others are a lovely wave of emotion but only the parliamentary one has official meaning. So if any reader is short of time that is the important one to sign.

Hi Denby,
The key word in Gunther`s comment is surveillance; I have no problem with DWP having access to bank accounts to ensure those claiming benefits are actually entitled to / needy of those benefits, but entering properties, arresting and other police force type activities do not come under surveillance; these I do not agree with.

Dear Andrew, I'm no more pro fraud than you are. But let investigations be carried out by the police, with the obligation to obtain a search warrant from a court if the person under suspicion must have their premises searched. The police, in my own experience, are not always what we would wish. But at least they are independent of the DWP. Remember, the Horizon IT system was originally designed for benefit administration - we read it here. And look what happened with all the denials about that.

They’ll check anyone’s bank account & for no particular reason, because they can.
I thought they could already do this as the bank was supposed to inform them if your account went over the limit.
