In this situation, the claimant is in the support group for UC, having migrated there from DLA. I my have got the name wrong, but basically it's the one where the claimant does not have to look for work.

The claimant has an illness like M.E., where their strength lasts only for a short time before they have to rest. Over the last four years or so, the claimant has been writing a novel, on those days when they had the strength to do so. The novel is now up on Amazon and as part of that publication the claimant decided to have the book 'polished' by a professional book editor and the results were excellent).

Would this affect the UC claim in any way? The book was written as a hobby (in order to keep the bed-bound claimant sane!) but would the DWP perhaps see this as demonstrating the ability to work, where in actual fact it is nothing of the sort?

Does the claimant need to declare this?

Hi King_Drax_I,

From what you have written it appears there is nothing to disclose to the DWP. As you say you have written a book as a hobby so that does not count as " work ". However if your hobby was to generate some income for you then you would be obliged to inform the DWP.

Hope this helps,
David
