Housing Benefit calculations when in Supported Housing was created by jasonh
I am wanting to find out how housing benefit is calculated for people employed in supported housing.
I understand Turn2Us gives the answers but need to know how this is calculated for my client to make decision on work options offered, without inputting new calculation each time .
Thanks for any advice given

Hi Jasonh
I'm sorry, but your question is outside the remit of this forum and not something that we cover. I have included a link to find a specialist welfare advisor in the appropriate area .advicelocal.uk/

if you have health issues then first £20 of income is disregarded
I'm not sure of the rules now that tax credits has gone but there is a 32 hour allowance too, about another £20 a week if you work over 32 hours
the amount you need to live on is called the "applicable amount", it's the same as your benefit entitlement, so lets say £70 for ease of calculation
you get your AA + disregards, £90 a week say, then 66% of your pay packet is taken off until the rent is gone
you earn £200
-£90
income is £110 x66% £70ish
rent £150 - £70 = £80 HB paid
I think, it's been a while and I hope to never be on HB again
then if your council has a council tax reduction scheme the calculation is similar but with a different percentage, there are benefit calculators online

HI Adam33
Good try but not correct, I shall not go through it all but give you the basics;
You have to work out the amount of eligible rent that will be used in the calculation taking into account size criteria and ineligible charges, usually in service charges.
Reduce this by any non dept deductions, this gives you your max HB.
Work out your Applicable Amount/Personal Allowance depending on your circumstances, premiums and any disregards you may have.
Work out how your income is treated
If your income is no more than your Applicable Amount your HB is the maximum HB
If your income is above your Applicable Amount, this is called excess income, this will reduced your HB entitlement by 65% of the excess income.
