PIP Claim - Identification Request?

PIP Claim - Identification Request? was created by steve30
I've started a claim for PIP, and along with the PIP2 form, came a separate letter asking for proof of identity. They would like me to post them my passport and various other documents like bank statements/council tax bills.

I'm just wondering if this is a common request for PIP, and if they are reliable at returning them to you (the letter insists they WILL return them). Is it possible to get a certified copy at the jobcentre instead?

Intriguingly, one of the documents they would accept is a "recent proof of benefits letter".

Thanks.
steve30.

Hi steve30

They are increasingly asking people to do this - but I understand your hesitation.

As you had a separate letter - I would ring the DWP enquiry line 0800 121 4433 and ask them to check your records to ensure it is a genuine request. Then I would ask them if there is a process to verify documents - like the post office does for the passport office without putting them in the post. If you do have to send them off - please make sure that you send them with tracked post. I know it's nearly eight pounds, but I wouldn't want my documents to disappear.

Hi steve30,
My friend recently claimed PIP and was asked to attend the Jobcentre to show their identity documents. But I think there may have been an involvement of UC or something too as there are children in the family, not sure.
Anyway they were very anxious in case it was a sneaky way to do an assessment without warning. But it wasn't, they were in and out in a few minutes having had their passport copied and on your way.
If it's feasible for you to attend like this, I'd ask to do that.
