UC overpayment - their mistake, I let them know before it was paid was created by marilja
Hello,
Hoping someone can help or advise. My statement for February's payment was wrong - they hadn't taken off the contribution based ESA I receive.
I called UC immediately I saw the mistake on the statement to tell them. They passed it on to a caseworker.
The next day there was a letter on the journal that said I had been overpaid (this was 4 days before payment due); also a revised statement showing the correct amount.
I wrote on the journal asking about the letter and the revised statement and which one was correct. Today I see in my bank that they've paid the wrong amount - the old statement - and so they've overpaid.
I'm exceedingly anxious about this - what should i do? Can I repay it immediately so that it's not hanging over me as if I have done something wrong? It will make it harder for me to understand the statements going forward if I have to keep checking that all the correct things have been deducted.
sorry. am feeling quite overwhelmed by this, and worried that they'll be angry and think I'm stealing money.
thank you for any advice

Hi marilja
You have heard of the expression - turning round an oil tanker - the DWP can take that amount of time making amendments. As it is their error there is nothing to worry about on your part.
Have a look at this useful guide from the charity CPAG about UC statements.

Let me know how you get on.

Thank you, David. I wrote the following in my journal, and hope they’ll get back to me.
Hello, I’ve just checked my bank account and I’ve received the wrong amount - so the overpayment, even though the new statement says the right amount, and I let UC know about it before the money was paid . I don’t know what to do, and am scared I’ve done something wrong or that UC will be angry with me.
Sorry

Hi marilja
Who did you send the Journal message to ? I understand that the Service Issue option on the menu has been withdrawn. So you have a choice of Work Coach or A Payment.

Oh! I didn’t know there was options who to send it to.
I just wrote in the box. And had a reply “you need to speak to debt management “ with the telephone number. I tried but didn’t get through.

Hi marilja
You were given incorrect advice by I don't know whom. You definitely don't need to phone debt management. Though of course if you are curious you can do.
