UC deductions was created by sleepycat
Hi, hope someone can help put my mind at rest (or else know I need to get this checked).

I've just had my first UC statement having applied because of ESA managed migration. Most of it makes sense, but one small deduction (£73.11) has me confused. It's apparently being deducted, "As you received benefits you were not entitled to" and is related to my ESA. My total entitlement seems correct, and there's also a reduction for my residual contributions-based ESA. What I'd normally do is wait and see if it's repeated next month, or if it's just them getting things sorted where I had a full 2 week ESA payment 4 days after I made my claim, and another on 3rd March (not that I can work out how the £73 would correspond to any particular portion of that) but if I wait that long I'll have missed the window to question/challenge it.

Any advice gratefully received! Thank you

Hi sleepycat

I would send a message to the UC Case Manager. To do this you just choose A Payment for the recipient and not Work Coach. Ask them which Benefit and if ESA whether contributions based or income based and to what time period it relates.

Let me know how you get on.

Thank you very much for your wisdom, David. I've sent a message, as you advised. I also asked if the deduction was likely to be repeated. I shall let you know what they say.

Their first attempt to respond:

"The deductions for ESA will not continue throughout your claim. I would advise to call them and ask what payments will be. They are a completely separate department to us."

I've asked them to explain who exactly they're suggesting I call. I'm assuming the department who deal with my ESA, which seems fairly pointless for a question about a UC statement, and deductions being made from UC payments (since they're a different department, if I've understood correctly). Will keep you posted...

Hi sleepycat

Sounds like a bit of " buck passing " to me.
