Hi Actonjon
This is a topical issue at present and it appears that Councils are trying to get extra Council Tax from disabled people around the UK. I have read the minutes of one Council Cabinet meeting that stated that some disabled people with relatively high Benefit payments should pay more even if they cannot work. The mayor in question agreed and said that if they couldn't afford the higher bill then they must apply for Local Welfare Assistance ( which is discretionary ).

Unfortunately last my local council voted (Labour RUN the tories voted against it because it'll put upto 30000 into debt) , to implement a 50% reduction only so everyone has to pay no matter what money they earn. Unless their was People exempt – or disregarded – from paying council tax

It came up in the last budget didn’t it that we all have to pay something now? I’d forgotten about it until we were billed last week. We phoned up to query it & got through to a real person within minutes, which was quite a shock. They confirmed this.

Hi Bud
I don't think this type of creative accounting with the Council Tax Reduction scheme was mentioned in the Budget. It is the prerogative of the individual Local Authority as to whether not to disregard certain types of Benefits income.

Thanks.
