ESA to UC migration: Permitted work was created by AR0000
Hi,

I have been going through the ESA to UC migration. I had my 'entitlement to UC approved' on the 19th of March, according to my Journal.

I have a complication relating to the Permitted Work I did while being in the ESA Support group. I did a tiny amount of administrative self-employed work. My entire earnings from this work for the 2023-2024 tax year were £960, and for the 2024-2025 year they were £213. Normally with annual earnings of under £1000 you do not have to even register with the HMRC. However, the client was based abroad, so I had to register with the HMRC in order to get a Tax Residency Certificate.

I thus had to state that I was Self-Employed on my UC claim, even though I am migrating from the ESA Support Group. I have now been ordered to have a Self-Employment meeting this Friday and provide evidence in regards to my Self-Employment. As I have kept business records I am worried that I will be considered 'organised' and therefore gainfully self-employed, and thus moved into that bracket within UC rather than being in the group that is not expected to do work-related activity.

Any opinions and advice gratefully received. Also, if anyone has any understanding of there being any equivalent to 'Permitted Work' in UC I'd like to learn about it.

Hi AR0000

I have published your post in case anyone else has a similar experience and can tell you what they did.

I'm afraid I cannot comment as it is outside the remit of this forum. You may need to speak to a specialist welfare advisor.
