Am I A Carer? was created by Meconopsis
I've received my migration letter and I'm doing my claim for UC (currently on irESA support group) I live with my elderly mother who has carers coming in to help with washing and dressing ect. Sometimes I give her her medication sometimes the carer does it also she couldn’t be left on her own. According to the UC claim form this would make me a carer but I didn’t think it did. If I say I’m a carer will this trigger an assessment? Is there anywhere on the form to say that really all I do is make sure my mother doesn’t wander off on her own? Like everyone else I cannot afford to make a mistake and lose money. Thanks.

Hi Meconopsis
As you are in the Support group you won't get an extra UC payment for being a carer.
If you want a more detailed assessment of your UC Migration you would be advised to phone the Citizens Advice Help to Claim phone number which is on page 2 of your Migration letter. Here is a recommenation--

I am in the Support Group for ESA and a carer for my dad so I get a Carers Premium added to my ESA, which means I get TP on UC.
If you do care for more than 35 hours a week and your mum is in receipt of the relevant benefits PIP or DLA, you could apply for Carers Allowance before migration to UC and if you qualify you will get a Carers Premium added to your ESA and then get transitional protection on UC.
