First work coach interview help please was created by Cinders2001
Hello we are migrating from ESA to UC at the moment.
It's my husband's claim.
I'm going to my first meeting with a work coach at the beginning of June and I need to know the right things to say!
I am unofficial carer for my husband's conditions as he needs help at various times of the day (less that 35 hours but definitely more than the 7 a week I think it said on the form).
He's a cancer survivor with lifelong consequences of many surgeries and is prone to sudden patches of low blood pressure at any time, especially during a procedure he still needs to do and will always have to do.
I drive him to all his appointments and get all his medication when he needs them.
I need to be on hand when I'm needed and up to now on ESA this has been possible.
We have been coping with what has been coming in on ESA and PiP and me staying home to help.
If I'm told to go out to work, and leave him to cope alone at home, I don't know what we are going to do.
Has anyone else been in a similar position and can tell me what to say to allow me to stay at home to continue the care please?

Hi Cinders2001
Hopefully, someone may be able to tell you about their experience.
Have you applied for Carers Allowance?

Hello and thank you for replying.
No I haven't applied for a carers allowance (even though I've been caring since 2013)
When I read other people's experiences I don't think I fit into the category enough.
Unless I'm reading the forms wrong. Which is a possibility!
I haven't even applied for a Blue Badge either but I'm sure we could have one.

Hi Cinders2001
Providing you fit the criteria, applying for CA would mean that you do not need to be looking for work; www.gov.uk/carers-allowance . Like most benefits, what you receive in one hand is deducted from the other which is why a number of UC claimants do not claim CA but just claim the care element of UC; assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/media/6...000d55f61d/admf6.pdf
If you were in receipt of the support component of ESA then you should be get the LCWRA at the start of your claim for your husband and you may be eligible to claim the care element.

Thank you!
Now I need to brush up on what I need to do about applying for this!
Can I do it when I meet the work coach?
Should I do it before?
Even more, how?!
Would it help the work coach decide my fate if I brought my husband with me? 😬

Hi Cinders2001
You will need your husband with you as you will have a joint claim and he will also need to sign a claimant commitment.
When you complete the UC online it will ask you if you are in receipt of ESA, just click yes, at a later date you will be asked if you were in the WRAG or Support group.
