Hello
I understand that the UC yearly uprates deduct from my TP.
I would like to know why the yearly rent increases deduct from my Transitional Protection in UC.
It seems unfair as I’m used to HB and rent being separate from my regular payments I receive.
Secondly, I am due to move in the near future. Will UC always pay any amount of social housing rent? Or is there a cap?
(Im not talking about under occupied bedroom allocation as I’ll only be eligible to move to the correct number of bedrooms ) I’m also guessing that if my new rent is higher that will also be deducted from my remaining TP?

Universal Credit was designed by Tory governments since the time of Ian Duncan Smith with the intention of reducing the amount spent on Benefits. The old legacy Benefits such as Income Support and Income Based ESA generally paid more. So to get your UC down to the standard figure the Transitional Element has to be reduced and one way of doing this is paying less towards your rent. This has always been a favourite trick of the Tories as they systematically over the years have reduced the amount available for rent by manipulation of the LHA ( local housing allowance ). But they keep the UC personal element the same so that the Tory press report that nothing has changed.
Yes any higher new rent will also be deducted from the TP.
There is the Benefit Cap.
The UC Housing Element is calculated according to the following rule:
F3110 When calculating the amount of the HCE for a renter a determination has to be made as to the size of the home it is reasonable for the renter to occupy. This is with reference to the number of people in the renter’s extended benefit unit.
