Hello, if you have money in the account and it’s a little less than 6 k with the benefits that come in. When you withdraw say 3k would that trigger the DWP into asking why and what u spent it on? Can you spend the money on what you need and like or do they scrutinise your outgoings and for you to keep a list although it’s under the 6k? Any reply would be helpful

Hi Vicks123
The DWP has new powers under the The Public Authorities (Fraud, Error and Recovery) Act passed into law in December 2025 regarding getting information from banks about savings. However this is not supposed to include fluctuations under the Benefits £6k threshold.
All UC claimants now have an annual Automated Claimant Review and a Forum member has reported being questioned about a reduction in savings. The DWP cannot penalise you though for spending savings under £6k as you wish as the notional capital rules only apply for capital that would be above £6k. So as long as you are not going to come into a sum of several thousands in the near future I would not worry.

Hi and thanks for your prompt reply. I have 2 small pensions coming to me next yr. I can take lump sum payment which I’m thinking and reduce my credit eg £3.5 k as with my benefits and housing I don’t want to go over the 6k but keep it well below. The 2nd pension is again roughly I was thinking of keeping and again it’s around the same figure as not to go over but when I moved I had the deposit paid and rent by my son in law and was going to take out the money and pay him back. Plus if I have like a £2 k left if I withdraw would that in like £500 amounts would it be questioned. As over the years my daughter has given money to input into my rent as the LHA hasn’t increased but rent have and bills etc and I thought take a little at a time and pay her some back although she has given a lot. I don’t want to transfer any but thought cash to take out?

Hi Vicks123
I cannot see anything wrong in what you are saying. Make sure you keep receipts for money going out just in case you are asked at an Automated Claimant review. You could ask a local advice agency such as Community Money Advice for help understanding pension rules.

I have lent my nieces money over the years, and clearly mark it in bank transfers, eg. Central Heating, Nursery Fees etc.
If you are paying back I would suggest similar:
Loan Repayment
House Deposit Repayment etc.
It keeps everything clear and keeps a record for you as well.
Just my advice.
Do what you like
It just helped me keep track of things.
