JSA to ESA was created by Chrissie301
Hi, I've been a member of this site for a while now, and have seen some really useful information. My situation is that I was made redundant at the end of September 2010 (after 27 years working with no breaks, not at the same place though) and have been claiming contribution based JSA and this ends early April. I applied for JSA as I didn't feel right being 'fit' for work one day and then sick the following day plus I want to work. I have had interviews, but it is obvious to me that I am really struggling with cerebral palsy and severe scoliosis attending interviews etc and have tests coming up for breathlessness which I have experienced for years but always struggled on.
Anyway, my question is, can I claim ESA when my JSA claim finishes? My GP has said that he will sign me off sick, but like many on here I'm not sure what to do and I'm worrying which as you know just makes everything worse.
Many thanks
Chrissie

There is no technical reason why you cannot switch from JSA to ESA.
You should look at the ESA Guides in the Members area, to understand what the ESA tests are and how you might map your illness onto them/

Hi Chrissie,
You might want to get advice about this asap bearing in mind that, at the moment contribution based ESA is not time-limited but contribution based JSA is. There may be an issue about meeting the contribution conditions for ESA if you leave it until your JSA has finished.
Good luck,
Steve

Sorry to be padantic, but do you mean when contribution JSA finishes?
Little paniked that JSA just finishes. Can't it be claimed until you get a job?
Thankyou,
Rachel

Rachel
JSA(CB) is already limited to six months, after that you are entitled to claim JSA(IR), subject to a means test.
