ATOS carry out what is called a pre-board check, when they receive the ESA50 back from a customer.
They will review the ESA50 and any evidence attached to it to see whether they can make a recommendation that the claimant meets the criteria for the WRAG, or the Support Group, if they cannot then a medical is scheduled.
For new claims, the percentage who don't need a medical is low, for those who are being transferred from another benefit to ESA, it is much higher.
