Disability premium and carer's allowance was created by annie-rose
Hi All,

I found out I have been awarded the Care component of PIP so thank you to this Website for all the wonderful advice!

I'm just wondering- I already claim ESA but am still on the Assessment rate (after a whole year). I also care for a family member in our house and have been given the carer's addition to my assessment rate ESA for a few months (although have been caring for several years).

I got a letter to say that I'm eligible for Disability premium to my ESA provided no-one claims Carer's allowance for looking after me- no-one does but I do get Carer's premium myself for my family member.

Would I not be able to claim this, as I already claim carer's allowance? Also can it be paid while on assessment rate ESA?

(As background: I have a psychiatric condition and need help with basic tasks of daily living but supervise and assist my family member for several hours every day and some nights)

Congratulations on the award.

You should be entitled to the Severe Disability Premium providing that you can meet all of the criteria (see below), the fact that you are receiving Carers Allowance (and the Carers Premium) does not matter, the test is whether anybody else is receiving CA for looking after you, which from your post is not the case.

You also need to be living alone or considered to be living alone, if you have a partner or someone else living with you then you may not qualify. You need to contact the DWP office dealing with your ESA and as for an IS10 form so that they can decide whether you should receive the premium.

As an aside, your post suggests that you have been receiving CA longer than you have been claiming ESA, if your CA was in payment when you claimed ESA then you should have received the Carers Premium from the outset.

Oh okay, I live with my family in their house so I guess that means I don't qualify? No-one qualifies for carer's allowance for me in my house but my Mum might be able to apply for Carer's credit towards national insurance contributions- I think that's right?

Also on the day I had the PIP paid into my account I also received some extra ESA (I think £200 or something)- why would this be? As I seem to have been paid the right amount (£72) since October last year.

Thanks so much for all the advice on the forum.

Oh also I was in hospital for a few months last year so I only claimed Carer's allowance after discharge in March/April (I obv. wasn't caring and couldn't receive it whilst in hospital) but had been claiming ESA from when I was admitted to hospital last year.

Based on what you have posted you should be receiving;

- ESA Assessment rate minus your Carers Allowance (£72.40 - £61.35 = £11.05)
- Carers Allowance (61.35)
- Carers Premium (£34.20)

If you receive the Enhanced rate for Daily Living then you should also receive the Enhanced Disability Premium, also known as Disability Income Guarantee (£15.55)

It is worth you contacting the DWP about the Severe Disability Premium, the worst they can do is say that you do not qualify, the person you care for should not be considered as living with you as they must be receiving PIP Care, AA, or DLA Care at the medium or higher rate, also children will not be counted, so it is only any remaining adults which may stop you getting the SDP.

Thank you very much for your help.

I am receiving Enhanced Care so I wonder why I didn't get a form about the Enhanced disability premium, only about the Severe Disability Premium. I will see if someone can phone the DWP for me and ask about this. Is there any chance that the extra ESA payment might be related to the Enhanced Disability Premium? (could they start that automatically?).

If you live in someone else's home (I live several family members but don't own or rent the house) does that count as having someone live with you?

Thanks again
