PIP review or change of circumstances? was created by KPPurple
Hi
I currently am in receipt of pip and its due for review next year. I know they'll review me around 6 months before it's due to end.
I have a few queries and would like advice:
1. I have a new condition and I know it has to be valid 3 months before and 9 months after you make them aware of the change. My condition was caused because I have another condition.
Do I let them know of my new condition or wait to my review?
I'm worried if I wait for my review and inform them of my new condition they'll say I should have told them earlier and stop my pip altogether.
I'm finding with my new condition on top my other condition I am having more difficulties than I did before.
can someone explain the difference between review pip and renew pip?
Is there a difference between applying for a change of circumstances and a pip review?

Hi KPPurple
It would depend on your condition and if it will be ongoing. It is a good idea to renew your claim early to avoid any gaps in your PIP claim. You do not have to inform the DWP if your condition has got worse you only need to inform them if your condition has got better.
Your award of PIP may be reviewed by the DWP at any time, even if you have an award for a fixed amount of time. The DWP will usually start to review your claim one year before your award ends.
You can ask to renew your claim in the last six months before your PIP award ends. You will need to complete another form and go to another medical assessment.
Three months before your PIP ends, if the DWP has not already reviewed your claim and you have not already started to renew, the DWP will contact you about renewing your claim.
If you are on the standard rate of PIP then contacting DWP for a change of circs will result in you completing another PIP form and go for another medical assessment, you may then be awarded the enhanced component. If your condition is terminal in which case you can complete a DS1500 but this only applies for daily living component of PIP, you will still have to complete the PIP form for the mobility component.

I need to clarify part of Gary's previous answer!
We cannot tell you that you do not need to inform the DWP if your condition has worsened but the reality is that the DWP are not usually bothered if a claimant does not, however, they will not be able to backdate any award if you have not told them.
One thing to consider is whether you would score higher than previously, a deterioration in your conditions does not necessarily mean that you will.

thank you for your replies
maybe I should clarify some of my points i have a visual impairment and on the first go I went to tribunal - it was very hard to get. I now have cataracts on top of my existing visual impairment.
My worry is that if I wait to review and then tell them about new condition they could turn around and say why didn't you tell us sooner? and they'll stop my pip altogether for not informing them of a new condition. As far I'm aware you are suppose to make them aware if your condition gets worse or better. Does the same apply for new conditions?
I was reading in guidance somewhere that if a claimant has x condition caused by y condition they will take the existing condition to form their opinion. is this correct? my pre existing eye condition has meant I was more likely to get cataracts. although they are operative the waiting list is very long.
any advice would be greatly appreciated.
I worry if I wait to my review to tell them of my new condition they'll stop my pip as I didnt tell them sooner. Has any other claimants brought up new conditions at review and has their pip been stopped?

No, they won't stop your PIP this would only happen if you failed to report an improvement and even then it would have to be a significant change in your conditions.
A new condition is treated in the same way as a change to your existing one.
As I said, if you do not tell them now then they won't be able to backdate and increased award when you are assessed.
If you report a Change then your whole award will be reassessed, a new PIP2 (not a review form) and likely a face to face assessment will be required. The new Decision will supersede your existing award whatever the result might be.

Hi Gordon
thanks for this- could you clarify what you mean by:A new condition is treated in the same way as a change to your existing one?
I don't think my award would change based on my new condition, it was hard enough to get pip and it went to tribunal.
When they review my claim will they look at the tribunal review as well as the original claim?
