ESA Contribution Based & Income based Migration to UC was created by EmmaP
Hello
I am currently going through migration to UC.
I received ESA - Contribution based & Income based, since 2016.
The Income based is being transferred to UC and the 'Limited capability for work' has been transferred to UC. Although it did appear on my journal that I needed to provide a fit note and see a work coach, it has been clarified I do not need to.
However.
Today I received a letter from ESA stating,
1) my Contribution based ESA, will change to New Style ESA from 11/01/25
2) I will be contacted to book an appointment with a work coach, which I must attend.
It then goes on to say;
"At the appointment we will ask you to;
-explain how your illness or disability affects your ability to work
-provide medical evidence
and that i must accept the claimant commitment"
1) Are all Contribution based ESA being transferred to New Style ESA?
2) If not, is it standard practice and correct for the migration to trigger this?
3) Does the limited capability, not transfer over to the New style ESA, the same as it has done to UC?
I fear there is the potential of receiving work capability assessments from both ESA and UC in the future.

Hi EmmaP,
To answer your questions---
1) Are all Contribution based ESA being transferred to New Style ESA?
2) If not, is it standard practice and correct for the migration to trigger this?
3) Does the limited capability, not transfer over to the New style ESA, the same as it has done to UC?
1. Yes on Managed Migration old Conts ESA becomes New Style ESA. They are basically the same thing, the main difference is that New Style ESA comes with a Claimant Commitment. But if necessary this can be agreed over the phone.
2. Yes Migration does trigger this.
3. Yes if you were in the ESA WRAG then you are automatically placed in the UC LCW and if you were in the ESA Support Group you are moved to the UC LCWRA. You definitely don't need a Fit Note. There are some examples of badly trained Work Coaches not knowing the procedure. But this can usually be sorted out with a complaint on the UC Journal.
Hope this helps,
David

Sorry to jump in on someone elses question but if you are on ESA contribution based support group I didnt think you were being moved over to UC? If you are is there a need to have a work coach if you are in support group?

Hi Chocolady,
If the only Benefit you are claiming is Contributions based ESA then you cannot be moved to New Style ESA or UC.
If you let me know what other Benefits you receive I can give further advice.

Hi Chocolady,
As you say you aren't receiving any DWP means tested Benefits then you should not receive a UC Managed Migration letter.
