UC claim NS ESA commitment was created by Madison AF
I have been helping a friend who is undergoing managed migration from Income-related Employment and Support Allowance (support group), which he has been on for many years, to Universal Credit. We attended a Job Centre interview yesterday to confirm his identity. Despite his anxiety at having to attend in person, the DWP officer was very patient and friendly, all seemed to go well and he was told that his first UC payment would be made on 7 August (amount to be notified on 4 August). So far so good. However, this afternoon, he received the following notification through his UC online To-do list:
'Your phone appointment to "Agree a New Style Employment and Support Allowance commitment" for Wednesday 5 August. Extra Information "During your interview, we will look at your Universal Credit commitments to see if anything needs changing. This is because of your claim to New Style Employment and Support Allowance (NS ESA)." '
He has not made a claim for NS ESA, though, and is now very distressed because he doesn't understand what this means? I am at a loss, too, so any help/advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, in advance, Maddie

Nothing on this board constitutes legal advice - always consult a professional about specific problems

Hi Madison AF
The only way to find out is to contact UC helpline: 0800 328 5644/5646/9344 and ask.
We quite often come across claimants who are in receipt of both IR-ESA and CB-ESA and they are not aware of CB-ESA.

I thought everyone in the support group ended up on NSESA as well as UC?

Hi TBA
That is not correct, Only claimants in receipt of CB ESA may end up on NS ESA.
The support group can be paid to both IR-ESA and CB-ESA claimants.
Claimants who receive both IR-ESA and CB-ESA may end up with NS-ESA and UC.
