Many Benefits and Work readers know only too well the misery of spending day after day trying to get through to the DWP on the phone without success.

There’s more than enough evidence of this in the hundreds of comments below our articles on the subject:

Which DWP number are you struggling to get through on?

0800 121 4433 PIP Enquiry Line

Earlier this month, one of our members contacted us in despair at her inability to communicate with the DWP .

Jane, (not her real name) a full-time carer had moved house and had tried for three solid months to phone the PIP enquiry line in order to inform them of their change of address.  As she put it, this was something DWP letters told them they must not fail to do ‘on pain of imprisonment’.

Jane made numerous attempts to get through on different days and at different times but without success.  She kept a record of all these attempts. She then sent a registered letter but received no response.

Jane was very concerned not only that she might be accused of failing to declare a change of circumstances, but also that any DWP mail sent to her old address would not be forwarded and their claim might be stopped.

We suggested to Jane that she contact her MP, pointing out just how unfair and distressing such treatment is and would they please contact the DWP themselves as Jane was unable to.

We are quite certain that MPs have their own hotline for the DWP and we know that contacts from MPs are generally treated seriously by the department.

Jane’s MP’s constituency office responded the same day, issuing her with a case number.

A week later, we got an email from Jane saying:

“I’m in shock ! The DWP complaints team have just got back to me and it’s all sorted now. I can’t tell you what a relief that is. I know there’s millions of people struggling with the system at the moment so I really appreciate this, and thank you for the suggestion. Good luck with your work, it’s so necessary.”

It really shouldn’t be so difficult to contact the DWP, especially when you there is a legal requirement for you to do so.

So, we’re suggesting that members consider following Jane’s example.  Keep records of your attempts to contact the DWP and, after you’ve made reasonable attempts to do so, ask your MP’s office to do it for you.

We know that most constituency offices are very busy places and that they deal with a  vast range of problems on behalf of people who are often close to despair.

But we think that the growing impossibility of contacting the DWP not only causes enormous stress and fear, but almost certainly leads to some people losing their benefits and possibly being threatened with legal action.

It’s not an issue that is the subject of campaigns by national charities and the DWP can no doubt produce highly dubious statistics showing how quickly most calls are answered.

So, it really is time that MPs were made aware of how big a problem this has become and that they need to do something about it.

So, if you can’t get through to the DWP, instead of it just being your problem, share it with your MP.

You can find out who your MP is here.

You can then either contact them via the form on the website or Google them to find their constituency office.

We know not all MPs offices will be helpful, so we’d really like to hear from you if you try, or have tried in the past, to get support from your MP in relation to benefits.

There is only one way to get hold of the DWP, Tax office and other government departments. You have to set your alarm and make sure you are the first one in the queue when the lines open. A real pain but it does work.

No kidding. Tried unsuccessfully 4 times to query their latest questionnaire. Your  How your disability affects you and has it got any worse. ( It has)  Your PIP is about to end ( paper work I have says that is in December 2023). " Government" guidelines says you have  a month from receipt of paperwork to complete said form. Mine is dated 4 April 2023. Arrived on Saturday 22 April!. Absolutely impossible to contact the DWP by phone. IThey state they need a few personal details such as your NI number and sort code. Fair enough but second time around they ask for your child's full name then! Your partner's National Insurance number as well. ( eh?) These are NOT details folks keep close to hand! And if you are DEAF as I am you cant understand a word they say. If your MP is a good one as mine most certainly is then get in touch. They DO have a direct line to the Dweeb. As do Citizens Advice.

Been trying DWP ESA helpline for weeks, still not got through to anyone to speak with. Also written to my local job center with no reply or response. Giving up on it. I just want to end my claim. Giving up, they can contact me if they want me, which I am sure they will when they realise they are overpaying me.

@Natalie But it's the same with every corporate body. In the 1970's/1980's, this would not be acceptable  and heads would roll.

@Natalie Sorry may I ask if it’s the income support payment that’s not been paid right? Because I’ve received the new payment rate for carers allowance however for income support I’ve been paid the old rate.

You really have to question whether this is being deliberately to put people off making a claim. It has taken me at least 45mins to get through on at least 5 occasions this month. 3 of these times I got so far only to be cut off. Absolutely infuriating.

I rang them several times they do a few engaged beers then hang up my circumstances have changed with mobility for the worse and I can't even report the change. Also I will be moving to a ground floor council flat that suits my needs as currently sleeping downstairs and a contant reminder that I can't use my stairs. Wih my mental health I have misplaced paperwork & don't know what date it runs out which is panicking me with other added factors of neurological issues.
Do they just be like nope & hang up how rude.

I received a text saying DWP had tried to call me... They hadn't. And that I needed to phone back before 5... Which I didn't.

I spent a while trying yesterday to ring once I'd built up the confidence, when I'd finally got through the automated women I was told the phone line was busy and then it hung up on me. This happened several times and I gave up.

Today I have tried again and to my amazement I actually made it through to hold. 57 minutes it took for someone to answer. They asked a lot of security questions which took 3 minutes and put me back on hold for 3 minutes and then said they had everything they needed and the call was over. Total time was 1 hour 4

They could definitely improve the line by telling you what number you are in the queue. I couldn't do any other tasks while waiting incase I missed when they answered

This is so stressful, I'm on PIP due to mental health and am struggling with paper work duecto a review. I got advised by CAB and other advice lines help to contact PIP enquiry line to ask for an extension as I get help but been unable get through. Been trying for over a week and same as eveyone else, some times cut off early other times jump through hoops entering personal info asked for to suffer same result of being disconected as line engaged or a message all agents are busy helping others. How can a helpline for vulnerable people and a line you have to legally report info to be so inadequately staffed. I will now as suggested here have to try going via my MP. Shocking service!

I cannot get through to the DWP. I answered their robot's various questions which included giving them my date of birth and yet I still find myself struggling to get through to them.

I can't even get that far, I go through automated, press this number that number. I complete my security questions then the line goes to engaged tone and automatically ends the call. I have been trying since Friday and have tried 19 times in total, at different times of the day and the same thing happens. This is not acceptable.

@Marie Exactly the same. Personally I do not believe that any of these corporations have "unusually high call volumes". I think this is now a generic term to prevent clients telephoning them, as they want to end the human contact side. My belief is that they subscribe to a telephone call centre technology which keeps caller's on hold for upwards of 45 minutes. I've noticed that 45 mins seems to be the golden target time, after that they tend to answer. They are not that busy  it's all a scam,  and they have the option to end calls before even placing them in a queue ! British Airways is one such example ! You may want to spend thousands of pounds on flights, but they frequently say "Sorry, because of unusually high call volumes, we are ending this call!!" True ! You couldn't make it up  it is very sinister.

I can’t ever seem to get through, neither you or universal credit are any help. Not only am I being underpaid by you without explanation or when I’m trying to figure out why…you don’t answer the phone, I was waiting nearly 2 hours for someone to help with any enquiries that I have!
