The DWP have confirmed that the programme of extending hundreds of thousands of personal independence payment (PIP) awards has now been completed. The August edition of the LA Welfare Direct Bulletin also gave more information about the purpose of the extensions.
The Bulletin, which goes out to local authority housing benefit staff, revealed that the programme to extend the PIP recommended review period (RRP) began on 16 June 2026. It was designed to extend the end date of current PIP awards in order to introduce a minimum 3-year review period.
The document goes on to say that “The process of extending these awards has now been completed and the volume of PIP ATLAS notifications should return to normal levels.”
ATLAS stands for Automated Transfer to Local Authority Systems. It is designed to allow councils to update benefits they administer, particularly housing benefit and council tax reduction, without the claimant needing to provide new information.
So, a PIP ATLAS notification could tell a council about changes to one of their resident’s PIP award rates or end dates, for example.
The DWP says it is aiming to provide “earlier notification of similar activities in future” to allow local authorities to plan for any impact on their services, suggesting both that local authorities were unhappy about being deluged with change notifications and that other large scale changes could be expected in the future.
