PIP awards by health condition and success rates

Benefits and Work has added a new resource to our personal independence (PIP) pages, looking at the  number of awards for all the 500+ different conditions that the DWP recognises for PIP.  We’ve also updated the success rate table for all PIP conditions.

The DWP divides PIP awards into one of 20 different categories. 

The top four categories:

  • Psychiatric disorders:  1,406,044 awards
  • Musculoskeletal disease (general):  691,426 awards
  • Neurological disease:  470,380 awards
  • Musculoskeletal disease (regional):  434,670 awards

make up 82% of all PIP awards.

These categories are then divided into sub-categories. 

Psychiatric disorders, for example, is divided into 20 sub-categories, with 396,000 claims based on “Mixed anxiety and depressive disorders” making up over a quarter of all awards in this category.

The sub-categories are then divided up into 500+ conditions, which we’ve put into a searchable database.

We’ve also updated the searchable database of success rates for PIP claims for all 500+ conditions.

    Dear starmer, why have you not shut down the 3.5k mp's get for free heating allowance (tottaly perverse)

    And  you need 100k from a doner  to buy cloths for yourself (yet you get 150k odd as pm), why are you shafting disabled people ?

    More news have emerged.
    ITV reported today there is a huge cut to PIP to save over £5 billions a year and I do agree with that report that number is huge cut bearing in mind that what the government spend on pip is £18 billions a year. So they are going to slash 25% of what they spend on PIP and I do not know how they are going to do that.
    But other reports in newspapers indicate that the £6 billion saving is from DWP and disability benefits including pip and these reports are more credible than ITV because PIP cannot be the centre of cuts to save that huge amount of money.
    Some reports indicate that well managed conditions like anxiety and depression will be excluded from qualifying PIP while other reports say young people (under 30) will be forced to work or study.
    But what catches my attention is that those unfit to work will get less money than those who search for work which means the standard allowance of universal credit will be changed to reward those who are looking for work by giving them more money and punish those who are unfit and not looking for work and those who unfit to work can choose to look for work voluntarily to get more money.
    Again we are going to see a huge change to disability benefits and most of us will be worse off.
    So we need to have a say in the coming consultation and say no to their proposals right away without second thoughts.

    I have just read that seeking support to employment and engaging with jobcentre will be voluntary.
    There is also an article in DailyMail suggest that PIP should be conditional for young adult (under 30) under the initiative (earn or learn) specially for mental health sufferers.

    But what makes me confused is why financial times and times attack the most vulnerable people in the society? The two newspapers turned to be gossiping newspapers drifting away from the core mission of newspapers as the fourth power for public good leaving the fat cats sucking the wealth of the nation transferring it abroad without paying taxes and punching us every day in every version like we are the enemies of the nation. I imagine one day they will call for sterilising us or gathering us in one place and bomb it but I promise them I will fight back fiercely and I will not let them take my right to live independently down.

      @Michael me neither. I could spot their lies and BS a mile off and also their  deafening silence on welfare throughout their election campaign. Even i am amazed at how bad they are and i thought the tories were bad! nothing on this lot!

    I have special needs and learning disability and epilepsy I can’t work . I get pip . I’ve had face to face meetings over the years. Weather it’s 3 billion or 5 billion it’s still a lot of are money plus all this about 1000 work coaches helping 65k disabled people into work is crazy . How about tax the rich and make people who have loads of kids how refuse to work make them work . And leave disabled people alone sorry my msg is long

      @Tom They've already got disability employment advisers in jobcentres, so what's the point of 1000 new work coaches.

      I hear the job title for this new lot will be Costcutters. They'll also be wearing a special uniform to represent their job role. A clown suit.

    That list of medical issues and the percentage of successful claims makes me wonder what percentage of the population with the self same disabilities do not even claim in the first place.
    Are there any figures from the government on that ?

    History repeats itself. We went to war in the 30s and 40s and lost many people. Then the sacrifices were rewarded with a welfare state that promised care from the cradle to the grave, now we are ending that and headed back to another war and a great culling.

      I doubt many people claim, and receive, PIP for "diabetes". It would be hard to class "diabetic issues" as a group for statistical analysis as it covers so many possibilities (neuropathy, retinopathy, ulceration, vascular problems etc.).

      Cardiac issues, there should be a category for, but that doesn't make good headlines for the Daily Mail.

    Given what we now know, and also the fact that it will affect all disabled people receiving state benefits, I have applied for an internal promotion at work because the cut in benefits will adversely affect my standard of living....and the Govt will benefit with more tax.

      Disgraceful.

      We can only hope that Rachel Reeves is just saying what the right-wing newspapers want to hear.

      If our country needs £5 Billion or £50 Billion or £500 Billion, the government knows where to find the money.

      The Conservative government gave out a £1 Trillion during Covid. Did you get your £20K? I would start by taking back the money that was given to the super rich (starting from the richest of the super rich) and keep going until you have all the money that you need.

    Hello all, I have contributed on various threads.  You may have seen in the BBC news website today that the Chancellor is planning substantial spending cuts with the OBR about to publish its growth forecasts. This is going to directly impact on disabled people.

    Coincidentally, any ideas that the charitable/third sector will assist can be dispelled if RNIB is anything to go by. Please take ten minutes to listen to last week's In Touch (link below).  It's very grim, not least the acknowledgement of how difficult it is for those who are blind/partially sighted to find work.  I would be interested in other contributor's comments.

      @Doomed by DWP Scop are not just going to roll over. I've rung their helpline, they are fighting the Government and meeting with them constantly.  They know other larger charities are too.

      @Charger 7 You will only have to go down to see a work coach now if you are not on the Support group or UC LCWRA group.  Or if you don't have enough information to prove your identity. Otherwise you do not have to see a work coach, on ESA or on Universal Credit if you are on either of the above groups.

      @Anon Agree 100% on that, the state is the biggest employer in the country, yet there is no creation of disability friendly jobs, that says it all really, its all about cuts rather than jobs.

      @Arthur Thats because LCWRA is an ongoing award, PIP cuts wont be like that, I expect they will affect anyone at review time.  Probably why they going to target PIP as the savings will be easier to make.

      @Arthur I'm not sure about that Arthur I know a few people having to Go down jobcentre now and they have been on Sick for years I heard friend from friends people are getting letters now and having to attend jobcentre to see work coach I'm devastated I have to tell people this but needs to be said one person in question had brain aneurysm and walks funny now but they called them in
