Which DWP number are you struggling to get through on?  Benefits and Work wants to find out more about which numbers have the longest wait times and also whether things improve with the introduction of ‘almost human’ AI chatbots answering calls.

Back in February, the DWP announced it was introducing Conversational Platform software to answer telephone calls.  The DWP described the voices claimants would hear as ‘almost human’.

Perhaps not coincidentally, the following month the DWP announced that it was closing 41 offices and that some staff would be redeployed to different roles.  The jobs affected are ‘back of house’ such as staff who answer telephones.

It may well be the case that wait times fall as a result of the introduction of AI.  But it’s also possible that the actual responses callers get will be of little help because they are simply talking to sophisticated FAQ software which can only give pre-programmed responses and can’t deal with follow-up questions.

As a first step we need to find out which are the numbers that you struggle with most and is it solely that no-one answers or do you get unhelpful responses, get cut-off before you’ve finished, get offers to call you back that never happen or get answers that are just plain wrong.

And do you know if you are talking to a human?

Some of the most likely suspects are:

Universal Credit helpline

Telephone: 0800 328 5644

PIP enquiry line

Telephone: 0800 121 4433

Jobcentre Plus for ESA change of circumstances

Telephone: 0800 169 0310

But there may be other numbers related to the benefits we deal with that are a problem for you.    Please let us know your experiences in the comments section below.

What to do if you can't get through

Some of our members have successfully got their MP's office involved when they have been unable to contact the DWP themselves. If you do try this, please let us know how it goes by leaving a comment.  There's more details here.

0800 169 0310 - Been trying to get appointeeship sorted for nearly 3 months, every time I call minimum of about an hour queue only to get nowhere. They can't be bothered to check if i'm a fit and proper person to act as his appointee but apparently I'm good enough to financially support him in the interim whilst his benefits remain frozen. Soul destroying.

Been waiting for 1 hour and 15 mins only to be then told that phone lines are temporarily closed. Only needed to ask for an extention in filling in review form as they sent it on 18th November and I have received it 7th December, they want it back by 15th December. What a joke, they do not give you a waiting time and now I will have to wait again tomorrow

First 4 times they hung up.
5th time, after 30mins of listening to soul-destroying music with no system to tell you where you are in the queue, a call-handler pretended that he could not hear me and finally hung up.

I have been on hold for over an hour, my phone battery died so had to hang up, every time I have to phone I have to wait, but this was the longest ever. I am an appointee for my disabled son and have to phone to sort out benefits. I wish there was an email. I’ve tried writing letters but they never respond to these. I will now have to try again Monday

Been on 08001690190 for over an hour.  10 minutes or more listening to a lot of info before asked reason for calling. She (bot) couldn’t understand what I was saying so put me on hold. My query isn’t covered by any of her suggestions.  I’m owed money from them, luckily I’m not as bad off as some.

The service is a diabolical, frustrating, complete & utter shambles!!! My phone runs out of battery before any sod picks up or even 'acknowledges' my call!!!

I've been trying to get through on 0800 121 4433 for weeks. As with others I get through the ID checks and then finally am asked a simple yes/no question which it doesn't understand when I speak and if I use the keyboard on my phone (mobile,) it doesn't register it. Then I'm thanked for my call or something that tells me the robot has finished with me and the line goes dead.
I've decided to write a letter and post that, as even with the postal strikes it's likely to get to someone sooner than a phone call might work. I just figured that at least getting something in the post makes me feel like I might be getting somewhere. It'll be slow, but it ought to arrive with them Ok and all of the phone calls aren't even known about by anyone at the other end. I'm still worried, but at least I know I've done all that I can.
Sigh.... here's hoping we all manage to achieve what we're trying to. Times are hard enough, eh.

    0800 169 0310

Trying to report an ESA change of circumstances at three this afternoon, still on hold at ten to five. Have been disconnected randomly twice and It also takes ten minutes to navigate the chatbot and listen to all the announcements about the cost of living payments.

@Andy Me too. Having exactly the same experience as you right now. What did you do? Only alternative I am seeing is to write them a letter, but that would take them weeks to deal with.

Sorry you've got this happening to you as well - so frustrating to wait and get nowhere.
Here's hoping we manage to achieve what we need to. Crossing fingers....

I asked for a pip form 2 weeks ago and was told it can take up to ten day to arrive, I’ve tried for over an hour to contact them every day this week but no answer not to mention the five mins waiting to hear all the recorded information before you press the correct number to relevant department. I just want the form how difficult can it be? No info on web site and no email address
I’m worried in case there’s a date in which to get form in and it will be rushed. I have a serious incontinence disorder and are on the toilet for most of the day , just can’t keep holding on phone

O8001690310 this afternoon . Gave up after 50 mins . I have had to send a registered letter as I’ve used up my minutes on my mobile and don’t have a landline. Neither to I have the time to wait . Unbelievable that I have had to go back to post. ESA has stopped going in my bank account in October and I’ve no idea why.
