Which DWP number are you struggling to get through on?  Benefits and Work wants to find out more about which numbers have the longest wait times and also whether things improve with the introduction of ‘almost human’ AI chatbots answering calls.

Back in February, the DWP announced it was introducing Conversational Platform software to answer telephone calls.  The DWP described the voices claimants would hear as ‘almost human’.

Perhaps not coincidentally, the following month the DWP announced that it was closing 41 offices and that some staff would be redeployed to different roles.  The jobs affected are ‘back of house’ such as staff who answer telephones.

It may well be the case that wait times fall as a result of the introduction of AI.  But it’s also possible that the actual responses callers get will be of little help because they are simply talking to sophisticated FAQ software which can only give pre-programmed responses and can’t deal with follow-up questions.

As a first step we need to find out which are the numbers that you struggle with most and is it solely that no-one answers or do you get unhelpful responses, get cut-off before you’ve finished, get offers to call you back that never happen or get answers that are just plain wrong.

And do you know if you are talking to a human?

Some of the most likely suspects are:

Universal Credit helpline

Telephone: 0800 328 5644

PIP enquiry line

Telephone: 0800 121 4433

Jobcentre Plus for ESA change of circumstances

Telephone: 0800 169 0310

But there may be other numbers related to the benefits we deal with that are a problem for you.    Please let us know your experiences in the comments section below.

What to do if you can't get through

Some of our members have successfully got their MP's office involved when they have been unable to contact the DWP themselves. If you do try this, please let us know how it goes by leaving a comment.  There's more details here.

Received a msg stating to call 08001690310 for update / information on my JSA claim a week ago. Still can't through, maybe the restart program can get through quick since they're mandatory for job club. 🤔

This is absolutely disgraceful especially considering they’re dealing with vulnerable clients! I have been on the phone with ESA for over an hour and still no answer after cutting my benefits in half! My anxiety and voices in my head have been increasing the whole time feel like just saying f it all let them lock me back in the damn mental institution and take the kids at least I won’t have to go through this shit!

Trying to get through to Pension credits to report misinformation on my form, but can't find a number that actually exists! Even the number on there own letter comes up this number does not exist, I have probably tried at least 50 different numbers but get the same message every time so how can I get the information changed?

Absolutely appalling service. My hubby was phoning today to ask if he could have an e.mail to clarify what he had been told to pay. Deficit of few thousand, he us 62 and medically retired.
Got through after 30 mins told us take off speaker, cos we were waiting all this time. They said oh can't hear you now! We kept saying hello hello, cut off again.
I got very similar treatment as a carer phoning re my sons dla.
This is shocking. I did eventually get my sons sorted, 2 days.
Did check re e.mails seems waiting list with that too.
I wrote in re my son was worried, never got any acknowledgement  but on the phone call they had received it.
What is wrong with their phone system???

Been on phone for over 50 mins and still no answer.
Wouldn't it be easier to answer then less people waiting so long to give information or get an answer

I received a text from DWP for my ESA asking me to call them STRAIGHT AWAY on 08001690310 allegedly for a possible change of address. I never changed address nor I will do this panicked me. I am disabled with serious mental health issues but I was left in harmful distress for two days now, as I cannot get through to them. I tried several times and after replying to the automatic initial identification questions I’ve been put on hold each time for over 40 minutes after which the line cuts, or the automatic voice thanks me and tells me to hang up. I had to rely on sedatives as I’m scared not getting through may affect my benefits which I rely on. It’s so unfair. They clearly are in error thinking I’m changing my address but they put the burden on me to call back straight away when it’s impossible to get through. I’ll be trying again and again not sure how else to get in contact with them

What a joke, trying to claim jobseekers allowance but being denied. Didn't earn much but paid full NI. When I speak to anyone they cant tell me what the threshold is. Last time I called they said 'Google it'.

PIP helpline number 0800 121 4433 is abysmal.  I’ve held on the longest without success/being answered for 1 hour 40 minutes and on average 50 minutes, and phoned twice a day for two weeks, but had to give myself a break for a couple of days as it made me feel sick and anxious. Why can’t they get more staff? 😑😩😢  Is it the one off disability payment making more people phone up?  I’ve made 30 calls approx in the last two weeks.  I’ve also been cut off several times after holding for 5 mins.  Can you email them or write but I guess that would take months for a reply?  ESA DWP

I have tried numerous times and days to contact on 0800 169 0310 re ESA, each time spending 5 minutes on security questions followed by 8 minutes on hold only to be cut off every time!
