Which DWP number are you struggling to get through on?  Benefits and Work wants to find out more about which numbers have the longest wait times and also whether things improve with the introduction of ‘almost human’ AI chatbots answering calls.

Back in February, the DWP announced it was introducing Conversational Platform software to answer telephone calls.  The DWP described the voices claimants would hear as ‘almost human’.

Perhaps not coincidentally, the following month the DWP announced that it was closing 41 offices and that some staff would be redeployed to different roles.  The jobs affected are ‘back of house’ such as staff who answer telephones.

It may well be the case that wait times fall as a result of the introduction of AI.  But it’s also possible that the actual responses callers get will be of little help because they are simply talking to sophisticated FAQ software which can only give pre-programmed responses and can’t deal with follow-up questions.

As a first step we need to find out which are the numbers that you struggle with most and is it solely that no-one answers or do you get unhelpful responses, get cut-off before you’ve finished, get offers to call you back that never happen or get answers that are just plain wrong.

And do you know if you are talking to a human?

Some of the most likely suspects are:

Universal Credit helpline

Telephone: 0800 328 5644

PIP enquiry line

Telephone: 0800 121 4433

Jobcentre Plus for ESA change of circumstances

Telephone: 0800 169 0310

But there may be other numbers related to the benefits we deal with that are a problem for you.    Please let us know your experiences in the comments section below.

What to do if you can't get through

Some of our members have successfully got their MP's office involved when they have been unable to contact the DWP themselves. If you do try this, please let us know how it goes by leaving a comment.  There's more details here.

cut off twice already today... been trying to get through to ESA for 2 or 3 weeks. I had a compliance interview, and was told my benefit would not change, but that I must contact esa and pip regarding the compliance interview and what was discussed.... What is going on here. over 1 hour waits, cut off several times for no reason. Are they trying to find reasons to chuck us off legacy benefits so we can all be forced into Universal poverty. I mean if I can't comply with the compliance officer. What am I supposed to do.

Absolutely pathetic service, 10 minutes of listening to automated messages, then on hold for 40 minutes before being cut off.

Surely there must be a better way of dealing with callers, after all all I'm doing is responding to their request for me to call 😡

There are a lot of questions on here, but no answers. I'll be surprised if anyone is actually reading this, except artificial intelligence who won't be able to do anything about it. I managed to get through to 08001690310 after being on hold for 50 mins, and was told I had come through to the wrong department (the fault of the AI that couldn't work out what I needed). I was transferred three more times to three different departments only for each department employee (or artificial intelligence) to tell me I'd come through to the wrong department. Then I got cut off.

I’ve been trying to contact ESA on behalf of my son who has learning disabilities and it’s an absolute bloody nightmare !!! After going through all the options press one for this press 2 for that it then goes on to say in your own words tell me your reason for calling , I do that and they get it wrong so after repeating this step they eventually say try going online to do it NO THERE IS NO OPTION ONLINE if I’m lucky they say stay on the line to speak to an advisor but I’ve done this about four frigging times now and every one I’m waiting nearly an hour listening to the same bloody message and the same music over and over and over …… I’ve still not been able to speak to anyone because I don’t have half a day to sit around trying to get through , where the hell are all these advisers ? My god do dwp only employ one person for the whole of the uk ??? And the worst part how the hell could my son be expected to do this if he had to, at one point the recorded message just kept saying please hang up , WTF 🤬

Third try to get through to PIP so far today.  This time I've been listening to the "music" for 40 minutes.  If that nice lady tells me "we are sorry, all our customer service agents are busy at the moment...." one more time, I will scream.  This is a ridiculous service.  Someone should lose their job over this appalling system.

The problem is not getting through with the number provided.  We have tied numerous occasions to contact the PIP claim line to no avail.  We have tried early morning, mid morning, and afternoon mid afternoon period with our a verbal contact response.  (We feel there should be notice saying don't call because no one would answer.)  As well as no matter what number you press it takes you back to the message you have heard before. It's a very unfriendly unhelpful operating system.

I'm a support worker , following up on a new claim for a tenant. The claim was sent in last year October 2022.  Is there another way to contact DWP with out failure.

08001214433. My husband has been trying for over a week to speak to someone about his claim being wrong. He has spent, each time, between an hour to an hour and a half waiting for someone to answer and still no one has answered.  How in the name of all that is sane can you put phone numbers on a letter header knowing that noone is there to answer? Absolute madness and being in a lot of severe pain isn't helping the matter at all.

John I have been trying the 08001214433 on a change of circumstances, it doesn’t matter what number appears to help you. After all the other suggestions they cut you off without any explanation. They tell you contact us straight away not if they keek cutting us of. And then what, why didn’t you tells before other problems arise. As to the other comments below I’m afraid the only other option is to write to them personally, and how long that takes is anybody’s guess.

I am a pensioner and also receive pension credit. I have just moved house and all I want to do is inform them of my new address, which I understand I am obliged to do. I have tried to do this online but can't do this because I do not have a passport number. Been on hold 3 times today and waited over 30 mins each time. What am I supposed to do????

Been accused of ESA overpayment from June 2020, I put mandatory reconsideration in April 2021, I assumed they dropped it as I didn't hear anything after, until this month (sept 2022) with no explanation, no answer to the mandatory reconsideration. I have no option but to pay otherwise they would have gone to my employer to take 20% and I don't even know what i'm paying for, can't get through to them. I can't even make a complaint due to that being a phone call as well. Tried for hours multiple days this month. DWP debt centre says they can see they haven't resolved the mandatory reconsideration and it's probably just the system and I have done everything right but they cant do anything and I need to talk to ESA direct. Hopeless :(
