Hello Mods,

Happy and Health New Year to you all, and thanks as always for all you do.

Have read through the Guides to PIP Claiming but still have a question. Does cooking a special diet, as detailed by Specialist Consultants, for Cardiac or Gastro problems count as managing treatments at home do you think?

Thanks once again.

You may be able to argue this but there are some issues that you will need to consider.

First, unless you are saying that you have problems Preparing and Cooking a Simple meal, you will need to identify the extra work / effort / activity required to do this. In other words what do you have to that is extra to your providing a normal meal.

If you do have problems preparing a normal meal, then you must explain detail what issues result from your not sticking to your special diet.

You need to try and make a clear difference, if you can, between the two activities, DM's are reluctant to duplicate points for what they view as substantially the same issue.

Hi Gordon, I am going to pick this one up from my point of view re; special diets.

I have Coeliac Disease amongst other things and am prescribed, and obtained on prescription, Gluten Free foods, the main one being flour and the other pasta.

This flour has to be turned, at least into bread, and as I am unable to prepare a meal or make this bread, my carer does this for me once a week and then it is sliced and put into the freezer so that I can make toast or a sandwich.

Making this bread does not come under 'prepare and cook a simple meal', but is essential for me to be able to eat.

Does this in your opinion come under managing therapies?

Thanks

Meant to add to the last post, that I also have a special diet cooked by my carer, but this I have mentioned in the 'prepare and cook' a simple meal section.

If you are saying that your diet requires you to eat gluten free bread on a regular basis and that it must be made at home and cannot be purchased from a shop then you may be able to argue that it forms part of your treatment, however, if this is merely one of a number of gluten free items that you can eat a part of your diet, then I think it unlikely you will score points for this.
