Advice on housing benefit premium was created by Kimbychick
Hi,
I have found out that I am entitled to severe disability premium. I read online that I may also be entitled to a housing benefit premium as I am on this. I am on income support and get £116 a week housing benefit as I am a single mother.
I would just like to know if you could tell me if I'm entitled to the extra housing benefit premium?
Thank you

Although HB takes account of SDP it does not do so in the same way as Income Support.
For IS receiving SDP means that you will receive the extra money, for HB the SDP increases your applicable amount for calculating your HB. If you are already receiving full HB then the SDP will not increase the HB, however, if your HB is being reduced (if you are receiving IS then this won't be the case), then it would reduce the reduction.
I hope that makes sense.

Yes thanks for the reply. It's just that my monthly rent is more than my monthly housing benefit and I thought maybe they would have made up the difference. That's because I had read I would be entitled to a housing benefit premium but I see now that as I am on income support this will stay the same.
Thanks for your time.
