Claiming ESA if left job? was created by KPPurple
Hi
I left my job a month ago because it was in another area away from family and friends. I have a long term condition which got worse when I was in my job- double vision when looking at computer screen and socially I was having issues getting out and about in my new place due to vision worse at night.. On my leavers resignation form it says, voluntary resignation.

Can I claim for esa. if I've left my job? I'm freaking out how I'll survive financially with the virus etc.

Hi KPPurple

The short answer is no. ESA is no longer available to new claimants.

You may be able to claim 'New Style' ESA. Providing you have at least 50 weeks of NI Contributions in both of the Tax Years 2017-2018 and 2018-2019 then you can make a claim for New Style ESA, this is a Contribution Based benefit so your household income, with the exception of any pension income you receive, is disregarded as are your assets and savings.

If you don't then your only option is to claim Universal Credit. I would ask you doctor for a fit note, if you can show that you left due to ill health then you may not be sanctioned.

Hi Gary
I can’t apply for income esa as i have savings over the threshold and so it’ll have to be contribution esa, I applied for contribution esa back in 2017.
Can I make a claim for new style esa? Will dwp ask why I left my last job? What do I say to that?
I’m worried that as my resignation says voluntary resignation that I won’t be able to claim esa at all!
Do they ask for a note from your employer or just from your doctor?

You are fine with New Style ESA if you have the necessary Contributions it takes no account of why you left your previous employment.

No PIP and ESA are separate benefits, ESA is paid for those who are unable to work due to illness or disability and PIP is paid to ill and disabled people to help them with the additional costs associated with their limitations.
