Motability vehicle was created by Onedaysoon
My son has a degenerative condition and has had a Motability car for several years. His current PIP award ran out just before lockdown and he has not been called for re-assessment. Motability renewed the lease on his car for 6 months but he has now been contacted again by Motability who say that the lease cannot be extended further unless he has a current award and, as he does not, the car must be returned in November. Am I correct in thinking that unless and until the DWP reassess him and decide he is no longer eligible to receive PIP, Motability will continue to receive the payment from DWP? If the car has to be returned, will he receive the PIP payment himself? Has anyone encountered this? Thanks.

Hi Onedaysoon

You say your son's award ran out during lockdown, but you make no mention of whether he was informed by the DWP on whether his award was extended. Someone needs to get onto the DWP ASAP and find out what the status of his award is. Only then will it become clear what is going to happen about his payments and Motability. It would be wrong to try and speculate - someone needs to ring and ask. You don't want to find your son with no car and no payments.

Thank you for your response - you are exactly correct about not being left without a vehicle or the money. To answer your question - no, the DWP has not informed him that the award has been extended but we assume that they are still paying the lease on the Motability vehicle as surely the garage would have contacted us to say that payment has ceased.

I spoke to the garage who were sympathetic but could only suggest calling the DWP, which I will do but I was interested to see if anyone else had encountered this situation.

Thanks

Hi Onedaysoon

Most people on this forum seem to either have been informed of their extensions or have chased them close to the end date. I'm not saying that it hasn't happened to anyone else, but please don't wait for anyone to say, because every case is an individual one. You need to know about your son. The fact they are currently paying will mean nothing if it suddenly stops.

If your son's PIP Award ended at the beginning of the year then that was it, no more payments, it sounds as if Motability have extended the lease on the assumption that he would challenge the Decision and give him time to do this and that time has now ended.

On the assumption that this is correct then he has two options.

- Make a Late request for a Mandatory Reconsideration

and/or

- Make a new claim for PIP.
