Nics and esa claim was created by lauren
Hi all hope you are managing to stay safe and well. I have been a the sole director of a ltd co which only employs me if that make sense.My profit has been minimal especially now so I have been paying voluntary class 2 contributions for the past 3 years.I had a bad fall and broke my arm so I can’t work.I tried to claim esa but have been the contributions I have been paying aren’t enough. Can any one shed any light. I have also received a letter saying if I want to make the shortfall up I have to pay £780 which I haven’t got... Thanks

Hi lauren

You have two options;

- If you have paid for Class 2 NI Contributions then you may be able to claim New Style ESA
- If you have not or do not have sufficient NICs then it would be Universal Credit, but this would depend on your circumstances as UC is means tested.

You can put your information into one of the online benefit calculators to see which will be best for you.

Hi Lauren, sorry to hear about your arm. If you look at the Members' Guide to ESA/UC, page 7, you will find the info on
"How to start, or change, your claim for UC" As Gary says
."... you will need to claim UC as someone who is unfit for work"
I do suggest you read the earlier pages too, slowly, so you get your head round it all as well as possible.
Best wishes, Denby
