Change Housing B / Working TC to UC was created by Rosy
Hello I'm wondering if anyone can advise
I'm currently getting housing benefit and working tax credits but if I move 20 mins up the road, I am wondering if I have to change to universal credit.
If I do, I don't know anything about it. My rent at the new place will be cheaper, but I'm not sure if I will be better off, or the same, etc.
Can anyone advise how I work this out? I am on the disabled element of working tax credits and work 16 hours a week. That might change later hopefully, so I'd be interested in both my current situation but also if things improve and I'm no longer in need of the disability aspect and can up my hours.
I currently get working tax credits each week as well as housing benefit, but I hear you lose working tax credits. Does Universal Credit replace those or are people really a lot worse off? Small differences don't worry me, it's just I don't want to find myself in a situation where things are suddenly not affordable, especially in a new area, new home, etc.
Thanks for any advice or knowledge given

Nothing on this board constitutes legal advice - always consult a professional about specific problems

Hi Rosy
It is not the distance that matters, it is if you change Local Authority area which matters, ie who you pay your council tax to.
If you change LA areas then you will have to apply for UC if you need help with housing payments.
You can check your benefit situation by putting your information into one of the online benefit calculators or seeking help from a local welfare rights officer.
