benefits and property question was created by freefee
hi,
in 2003 i first started claiming benefits, which at the time was incapacity benefit and DLA, since then i have been moved to ESA support group contribution based, and pip, my home has always been in my wife's name, as she was the only person listed on the mortgage, which has been paid off for a number of years now, she recently agreed to having my name added to the deeds, just wanted to know if this would affect my benefits, i don't recall any question's about property ownership when making a claim , the property would be worth about £300,000, any help regarding this situation would gratefully received, we have been married 27 years in September of this year, although we have no plans to divorce, in the future, who knows? i am looking at being added as a joint tenant, which i believe give me a 50% share in the home, again any advice welcomed, many thanks

Hi freefee,

My understanding is that the value of your own home is not relevant to benefits. By getting you name on the deeds is only making an informal situation into an official one. I'm any event, since you are receiving contribution based benefit capital amounts are never taken into account.
I hope this helps.
