Awarded PIP, am I entitled to SDP with IS? was created by paulcornwall
Hi, a quick background.
I've been looking after my disabled mother for a couple of years and receiving carers allowance. I have recently become ill myself and had to stop my caring role. My GP suggested I should claim PIP, so I did and was awarded enhanced care and std mobility.
Here comes the twist - My daughter is also disabled and my wife is her carer, she received higher rate care and lower rate mobility DLA(if would seem her disease has been inherited from myself, hence why we are both suffering).
No one is currently claiming carers allowance for myself. Does this mean we are entitled to the severe disability premium with our income support?
I'm slightly confused as the information I have read mentions both partners must have PIP or similar but nothing is mentioned if the other partner is caring (and claiming carers) for my daughter.
Can someone help shed some light on the confusion. I hope everyone is coping and keeping safe. Thanks in advance. Paul.

Hi Paul
Unless your wife is in receipt of DLA care component or PIP daily living component then the answer is .... no
There are two sets of requirements for the Severe Disability Premium.
First, to be eligible for the Premium, you need to be receiving a qualifying benefit such as the PIP Daily Living award that you have just received (there are others), you lived alone or were considered to be living alone and no one receives Carers Allowance against your PIP award or as a couple you can qualify if both you and your partner get a qualifying benefit (PIP daily living).
Secondly, to be entitled to payment of the Premium you need to be receiving an Income Related benefit such as ESA(IR), Income Support or Pension Credit but not Universal Credit.

Thank you for the reply Gary. So, if my carer was to claim carers allowance, I assume this would not effect my PIP?

Hi Paul
You assume correctly, if claimant A claims CA for looking after claimant B then it would affect income related premiums claimant B may be able to claim ie SDP, It would not affect PIP.

Let's assume the claimant for carers allowance is not living in my household. Would this have any negative impact on my PIP payments?
As my illness is inherited, hence my daughter has the same disease and claims DLA. Would we be entitled to any additional premiums with our income support?

Hi Paul,
PIP is not affected by any other benefit. However, being in receipt of PIP may serve to get additional income (eg premiums ) on means tested benefits such as ESA. As Gary has mentioned if you don't have anyone claiming Carer’s Allowance and live alone, or a couple each have a PIP daily living award and neither have anyone claim Carer’s Allowance for caring for them you can get what's called SDP or severe disability premium.
I'm not sure your scenario will however qualify. You may find it helpful to ask a local advice centre to do a full benefits check. Then you will be clear on your entitlement.
I hope this helps.
