Confused about ESA CB changing area and housing el was created by Agis
Hello, I am currently on housing benefit Employment and Support Allowance and Pip for my disability. I want to change the boroughs of where I live and I am struggling with anyone giving me a correct answer. I was told that I will need to apply for Universal Credit instead of Housing Benefit that I have now. I have met today with a friend who is in a similar situation to me and she told me when she changed boroughs on benefits she didn't have to fill in any universal credit applications. She is on ESA. So I am very confused as to what I would have to do when wanting to move from here. I am on a contribution based esa in a support group which means I am unfit to work. Next prognosis of a review is in two years and I don't want to loose it by going to Universal Credit but I need my housing costs paid. What should I do. It makes me feel very confused and when she told me she didnt need to change anything.

Hi Agis
If your friend applied before January this year then they would be correct, but from January this year the rules changed.
You can keep your CB ESA but you will have to apply for UC to claim the Housing Element. Some claimants are better off claiming NS ESA and LCWRA. I would advise you to seek help from your local Welfare Rights Organisation, you can find your local Welfare Rights Organisation to help you with advice by clicking on the link below and putting in your post code, it will then come up with a MAP with a list of agencies. advicelocal.uk

Hello Gary, how can I apply only for a housing element if they ask me to fill in the whole Universal Credit application form. Do I need to fill in the whole form or there is special form just for the housing element? If there is not, should I just apply for the 'whole Universal credit' and explain in the application that I am on ESA CB? How do I approach that? Thank you

Hi Agis
You have to complete the whole form on line which will ask you what benefits you are receiving, as a cautionary note you should ask your Dr for a 'fit note' to give to your workcoach.
Once you have applied for UC, you can add a note in your journal that you are in receipt of CB ESA.

Hello Agis,
I am in (nearly) exactly the same situation, although I am not changing boroughs, I have an 8 week break between my addresses, therefore, lost the Housing Benefit due to it being over 6 weeks in the house move. I was told to apply for UC for the housing benefit, but it has started a whole new process regarding my ESA.
As Gary said, I have been advised to upload an Indefinate Sick Note from my GP, which will re-direct my claim from the Job Centre appointment I have just been sent.
This is a very poorly thought out process. Absolutley crazy, and VERY stressful (which does nothing to help my condition). Good luck
