Hello,
I’d be very grateful if someone could please answer the following question:
I have been in receipt of CB ESA for many years due to my poor mental health but don’t claim any means tested benefits. Sadly my Mum died last year. I‘m surprised to find I’m due to inherit a 3 figure sum. I’ve checked on this site and it seems that it shouldn’t affect my benefit. However I wanted to check if I’ve understood this correctly please?
Thank you.

Hi Charlotte1893
As you are in receipt of a contribution based benefit (CB ESA)and not a means tested benefit (IR ESA) then any savings you have are not taken into account.

Ps sorry to go on but I thought I should ask. Am I right in thinking that I do still need to inform the DWP even if it doesn’t affect my benefit?
Thank you.

Hi Charlotte1893
If you feel better for informing DWP about any inheritance then go ahead and contact them, make sure you record the time, date and name of the person you speak too.
Remember you can have savings below £6,000 before it affects any means tested benefits for claimants below state pension age and below £10,000 for claimants of state pension age.
If you only receive contribution based benefits then savings will not be affected.
