ESA50 form was created by Angela
Hi all, after being in receipt of ESA support group for around 6 years and both enhanced rate for PIP until 2031. I received an ESA50 form to fill out, which is stressful enough. My husband who is disabled is also on my claim, as a couple. My question is, My husband has just been diagnosed with blood cancer and has started chemo meds, and because the form is in my name would I write a separate letter and tell them, or would they not be interested in this? I did ring and ask them but the advisor said the form is about me and basically didn`t know! I did say that yes, we`ve both got disabilities and are limited in our daily life. But the guy didn`t seem to care, we are very stressed about his recent diagnosis and I cannot get an appointment with the CAB and I don`t really know what to do. Can someone please advise us?

Hi Angela

I'm sorry about your husband's diagnosis. This is clearly a stressful time for you.

The advisor was correct. Although you are both on the claim, the form is about you and your disabilities.

Have a look at our guide on how to fill in the form. benefitsandwork.co.uk/guides-for-claimants/esa

Once you've had a look at the guide, if you have any questions come back and ask, and we will try and help.

Yes, I`ve been filling my ESA50 form out from your guides on here. Thank goodness you provide this service! I`m really considering not to apply though because I`m so ill and stressed and don`t really need anything else to add to it. If I cancel my claim for ESA could my husband apply for some other benefit instead? He already gets enhanced pip.

If your husband worked during the two Tax Years 2020-21 and 2021-22 then he can claim New Style ESA, this would be a claim on his part only.

As a couple, you could claim Universal Credit but this would require you to seek work or to apply for Limited Capability for Work, this is the same assessment as you already have for your current ESA.

My husband hasn't been able to work since his accident, unfortunately. He had multiple life changing injuries and now blood cancer. I have a brain condition and multiple health issues to. I'll fill the form in the best I can using the guides from this website. We're dealing with alot right now and not sure how long he has got. But I suppose they're only doing their job and compassion doesn't really come into it. I'm just very scared and worried about everything. Thank you for your help.

If you phoned your local job centre would they help you fill them in? Or perhaps a charity like Peabody trust or help the aged? You are really up against it there needs to be some support for you both!
