Hi
I just wanted to say thank you for the guides. They have been invaluable to me over the last year.

I initially applied for PIP in July 2022. I was working at the time, but I was struggling with PTSD and severe depression since my son took his own life in 2020. I was run over in a hit and run incident in October 2021, that left me with a crushed foot and ongoing mobility issues and chronic pain.

At first I was awarded 0 points. I used the mandatory reconsideration template to help me with the reconsideration. This came back with some points but not enough to get PIP.

I lodged an appeal online and in December 2022, the DWP rang me and said they could change their decision! They offered me standard rate for both elements, backdated to July. I was basically told to accept the offer and not go to appeal because there was a chance I would lose it all.
I accepted the standard rate.

In April 2023 I was reading the award letter again when I noticed they had completely misinterpreted my problems. I decided to reinstate my appeal. Because it was over the deadline, I has to write a letter explaining the length of time to lodge the appeal.

I explained that I had felt bullied into accepting the standard rate, and that having re-read the award letter, I realised the DWP had ignored some of my issues and had not used the correct descriptors for my case, therefore awarding me lower points than they should have awarded.
The appeal was accepted by the tribunal and in June 2023, the DWP rang me, before the tribunal date, saying that they had looked at my evidence again and could award me PIP at the enhanced rate for both mobilty and daily living, backdated to July 2022!

Without the help of this community and the guides, I would never have had the courage to fight against the DWP.

My brother is going through the same rigmarole with the DWP now, and I am helping him. He received 0 points for mobility issues far worse than mine. It feels like they don't read or take any notice of what they are told. Even with medical evidence, they treat you as though you are a liar!
My brother is in the mandatory reconsideration stage. If he doesn't get enough points, he will go to appeal. I am positive he will get both elements at the enhanced rate, with the help of your fantastic guides, eventually. It will all get backdated to when he started his application in February 2023. I am very confident this will happen because I have been empowered by this website and all the support from the guides, and have first hand experience of how fantastic the advise is. Thank you so much!!

Hi KarenB

What fantastic news. Many congratulations on getting the DWP to offer you a new award before it went to the Tribunal. And well done to you for reinstating your appeal when you realised they had ignored evidence and how you felt bullied to accept their previous offer. That took guts, and I'm so glad that you went ahead and had a positive outcome. That is good to hear.

Glad you found the guides so useful in your battle.

Good luck with your brother's appeal. He's lucky that he has your support and experience.

Hi KarenB,
Well done! I'm glad you found our guides helpful. I'm never sure whether the system is just broken, or designed to defeat claimants, but clearly persistence is key, and here it has definitely paid off. Thank you for sharing your story.
