PIP and Carers Allowance was created by bikerdave5
I receive PIP for mental health and speech disabilities. My partner gave up work some months ago to care for me and receives Carers Allowance. Two months ago she was diagnosed with a non malignant brain tumour which was removed. It has left her with health issues of her own which may be long standing. She is recovering and we obviously hope she recovers more. There is a possibility that in four months more she may be entitled to PIP herself especially on the mobility front due to extreme fatigue. Can you advise at what point are we obligated to inform DWP of her current health position in relation to her Carers Allowance. ( Its a mute point who is caring for who at the moment). Can you receive both CA and PIP at the same time? Is it wise to give up an award of CA for the possibility of a PIP award. Any insights from anyone gratefully received

Hi bikerdave5
There are people who receive PIP and receive carers allowance - however, there are also people who have received carers allowance, and when they have successfully applied for PIP, they find their carers allowance cancelled. It will depend on what sort of care a claimant gives and what sort of difficulties they have requiring PIP. The decision for that is made on an individual basis.
The issue, as far as the DWP is concerned, is can your partner fulfil their role as a carer and care for you for 35hrs a week.
I can't tell you whether they should give up carers allowance in favour or a possibly PIP award because I know nothing of your case and nor am I an assessor. If your partner was awarded PIP and received both components, there is the possibility that they would receive more money.
