Claiming UC and training was created by Gill
My son receives disability benefits (UC Support group and PIP). He attends a therapeutic gardening group run by our local mental health Trust and would like to study for NVQ 3 there. Can this affect his UC/PIP? He attends maximum of 2 days per week.

Hi Gill

There is nothing to stop him doing this and I hope he enjoys it. The only thing you have to be aware of if his experience there would contradict any parts of his current award or could be misinterpreted. Only you can decide that.

For example if someone says they have problems with communicating but they are managing a therapeutic group - an assessor could well argue that the issue is not as bad as they say it is. Of course this is often nonsense because they could attend and still struggle with communication and they are not at the group for the 'majority' of their time. Just make sure you have the answers ready if you think there are any areas that someone else could view differently.
