What type of Support for My Dad was created by Plank
My Dad is in his late 70s and had a horrific accident many years ago and its now having a larger impact day to day. He is also having financial difficulties.

I wondered what the community here thought would be best to apply for, and what they generally thought about his case:

He was hit by a bus which crushed his foot/ankle, broke his back, and of course had many other injuries and was in hospital for nearly 2 years.

Currently he has some days where his ankle freezes up and he is unable to get up until he mobilises it via movement. Generally however he is quite mobile (is painful, takes a long time, can't do as much) but avoids walking where possible/reasonable, He is able to walk but is slow and in pain, after 10-20 minutes or so everything aches and depending on his pain level he will continue or need to stop completely.

His car is very important for him to keep him independent and to be able to get closer to things like the store.

He sometimes is unable to get up from bed or the TV sofa in the evenings/night and will not be able to make it to the bathroom so he will use a bottle.

He has also had some accidents where I think because he is a little unstable he is a little more clumsy than someone else, (fell and broke his ribs recently).

I also think that this has led him to not take care of his feet or occasionally avoids cleaning the apartment as its a little more difficult for him than others. On a bad day I think he would just not leave the house.

My concern is that because he has reached state pension age, and he is relatively mobile and stubborn that he is unlikely to get any support. So far I am looking at getting him a blue badge, Housing benefit, and Council tax support (he is not very financially stable) but would love to know what the community would suggest here.

Hi Plank

I would advise you to talk to a specialist welfare advisor and see what is available to your father. Click on the link to see if you can find one in your area. advicelocal.uk/

The one benefit you may want to apply for is Attendance Allowance. You can look at the details under the guides. I can't comment on other things.

You could look into whether your dad qualifies for pension credit.
